End of the Semester

I really can’t believe spring semester is coming to an end. It has flown by! This semester was definitely a change for me. Moving from UGA was a huge change. Going from 300+ seat lecture halls to taking online classes took a little while to get used to. On top of that, getting accustomed to my new role as a mother has been an awesome experience, but has been an adjustment as well. So far this year has been full of highs and I am thankful to be able to say that there haven’t been many lows at all. The only negative about this semester was having a sick baby with RSV. That was a very stressful and scary few weeks, but she is now perfectly healthy and I am thankful for it!

This semester has been full of firsts and overall, has been a great few months! I am looking forward to the great things to come.

Bucket List

There are so many things that I want to do before I die! I’ve never actually written out a bucket list, but I have a pretty good idea of some fun and exciting things that I want to accomplish.

I want to finally get my SCUBA certification. I dive almost every summer, but have yet to actually go through the certification process. I speak some Italian and I REALLY want to go to Italy soon before I forget the language. I want to finish school and work for an event planning company in Atlanta or Savannah. I would love to go skydiving or bungee jumping, but I think I would chicken out. I’ve always dreamed of planning my wedding and I am finally about to be able to cross this off my list next year.

Most importantly, I want to watch my child live a happy and healthy life. If I don’t get to do any of the above, I will be perfectly happy knowing that I have a sweet little family of my own. My daughter is my proudest accomplishment yet.

When I die, I mostly want to be remembered as a caring and loving person. I want people to think of me as a wonderful mother, wife, and friend. I also would want people to know that I lived a very fulfilling life and had that I had no regrets.

No Texting and Walking

When I read this week’s topic, I had to laugh because I currently have a bruise on my leg from texting and walking into my bedroom door. I use my phone for everything and I hate to admit that I might be addicted to it. I do, however, hate when someone is too busy texting to notice that they are about to walk right into you.

I don’t think that there is much that anyone can do to prevent people from texting and walking. Our society’s obsession with technology makes people (including myself) feel like they need to be “connected” at all times. I do think that it is a topic that should be discussed in order to make people aware of the potential dangers that come along with it. Texting and walking on the sidewalk or across the street can be extremely dangerous. It is very easy to bump into people while walking through the mall and if you aren’t careful, you could easily break something in a store. These things happen very often and I think that there are a few PR tactics that may help communicate these dangers to the public.

I think the key to educating people on these dangers is to not take it too seriously. “The dangers of texting and walking” sounds pretty stupid until you really start to think about various situations in which it could truly be dangerous. If I was responsible for creating a commercial for this topic, I would make sure that it was both amusing and informative.

Teen Pregnancy

The biggest issue that I have with “Teen Mom” and “16 and Pregnant” is the fact that neither show is truly realistic. I feel like the shows focus more on the drama surrounding the teens’ lives rather than the impact of having a child at such a young age. I actually find it rather sad that teens are getting the impression that the only thing they’ll need to worry about is whether or not their baby daddy will stick around or if their mom will babysit when they want to go out and party.

I used to watch both shows on a regular basis, but now that I am a mother myself, I find them ridiculous. The fighting, screaming, cussing, and overall terrible parenting does nothing more than add fuel to the fire when it comes to stereotypes. If the goal of the shows is truly to educate viewers on the changes that occur after becoming a teen mom, then the focus should not be on the crazy drama. It would also be a good idea if MTV would choose more girls that aren’t complete idiots and poor excuses of parents. I always wondered why MTV chose to cast the types of girls that were on the show. Although I do realize that no one wants to watch a show about responsible ad intelligent young parents.

It’s hard to say whether or not MTV is actually glamorizing teen parenthood. When I watched the two shows, it really did nothing but make me thankful that it was them and not me. They make parenthood look miserable and unrewarding, which in my opinion, is almost as bad as making it appear to be undemanding. MTV should work harder to demonstrate the wide spectrum of emotions and situations that inevitably come along with becoming a young parent. They should also show the true hardships and struggles without making every teenage girl in America terrified that they will become the next Jenelle Evans.

Social Media Shutdown

If all social media websites were shut down, I would feel completely out of touch with the world. I check Facebook multiple times a day because I enjoy being able to keep up with my friends and family. Facebook makes it quick and simple to check in on a family member who has just moved away or your roommate from freshman year who has just had a birthday. I don’t personally use Twitter very often, but I have many friends that tweet constantly and I know it’s also extremely common among celebrities who, without it, would have one less outlet to use to reach out to fans.

I think that it would be difficult for most people to adjust to a life without social media. We have such a fast-paced lifestyle and it’s not always easy to find an extra 10-15 minutes a day to call and chat with a friend, so we write on their wall or tweet them to say “I miss you!” For many people, the transition would probably be hard.

Without social media, business would have to become more creative in their marketing and advertising endeavors. Celebrities would have to find better ways to dispell rumors other than Twitter and the majority of Facebook users would have to start using their cell phones for more than changing their statuses and playing Brick Breaker during a boring lecture.
